Bill Weaver presents "Repotting your Cymbidiums for all the right reasons"



We are pleased to announce one of our own advanced growers, Bill Weaver, will be speaking on “Repotting Cymbidiums for all the right reasons”. This extended skill session will be a hands-on demonstration and interactive discussion on repotting and dividing Cymbidiums. His demonstration will cover these topics & more:

- deciding when to divide a plant, and how to do it

- selecting the right pot size for the divisions

- how to pot up without dividing

- methods for sprouting backbulbs

- how to virus test

There will be ample opportunity for questions, so come ready to learn new techniques and ask about anything that’s been puzzling you.

Bill is a long-time club member who grows Cymbidiums and other orchids in Half Moon Bay. He was a plant geek starting at an early age. In the early days he would dumpster-dive at the local nursery looking for cuttings and plants he could rescue. When he went to college, he took along his terrariums of carnivorous plants. That is where he ‘met' his first orchid. It was an un-named white Cymbidium purchased at a drive-in theater flea market. This led to an ever-growing collection of orchids under lights in his Palo Alto apartment. After moving to Sunnyvale, he quickly filled up his backyard and started renting space in Half Moon Bay. He has expanded to over 8,000 square feet there in over ten years. Bill is now retired after 37 years as a Customer Engineer with Hewlett Packard, and makes his ‘orchid money' helping other growers with their greenhouses and repotting. He grows mostly Cymbidiums, Laelias, and other cool growing orchids. Over the years, Bill's plants have been awarded HCCs, AMs and one FCC award from the American Orchid Society as well as several CCM and CCE awards for his giant specimen plants.
