We welcome club member Pierre Pujol this month, speaking on his latest observations on cymbidium culture and hybridizing. The presentation will review his recent experimentation with different media and techniques, watering techniques, and other thoughts.
Pierre began growing orchids in 2010 when two neighbors gifted him pieces of cymbidiums, which he helped them repot. He grew his collection first in his backyard in Redwood City, then expanded to a greenhouse space in Half Moon Bay. Using his life science background and the quest for new challenges, he strived to provide the best care for his collection and then foray into creating his own hybrids.
Pierre enjoys sharing his orchid experience with fellow growers, with displays at local shows and presentations at orchid societies. His efforts have been rewarded with many Cymbidium Society of America and American Orchid Society awards. He has also won the prestigious Award of Quality for a showing of 14 plants of Cym. Samurai Spirit at the POE 2024, and for his hybrid of Cym. Sylvia Darr (Pinata Magic x erythraeum) at the POE 2023. Of the 17 plants in his AQ Display, 3 cultivars received AM and HCC awards.
His hybrids are now finding their way into many collections, as far as Thailand and Australia.
